The Indian sloth bear (Melursus ursinus) primarily has an insectivorous diet, but it is also omnivorous and consumes a variety of other food items. Its primary food sources include:

    1. Insects:

    • Termites and ants are a major part of the sloth bear’s diet. They use their long, flexible tongue to extract insects from their nests or mounds.

    2. Fruits and Berries:

    • Sloth bears also consume a variety of fruits, including mangoes, guavas, bananas, and berries. They are known to forage for these in forests during the fruiting season.

    3. Honey:

    • They are known to raid beehives to consume honey, which is a rich source of energy.

    4. Small Vertebrates:

    • While not a primary part of their diet, they occasionally eat small vertebrates like birds or rodents if they come across them.

    5. Roots and Tubers:

    • In addition to insects and fruits, sloth bears also dig for roots and tubers, which provide additional nutrition.

The **Indian sloth bear** (*Melursus ursinus*) primarily follows an **insectivorous diet**, but it is also known to consume a variety of other foods depending on the availability of resources in its habitat. The primary components of its diet include:

    ### 1. **Insects**

    – The sloth bear’s most preferred food is **insects**, particularly **termites** and **ants**. They use their long, curved claws to tear open termite mounds and ant hills, and their long, flexible lips help them suck up the insects. This diet provides the sloth bear with much of its nutritional needs.

    ### 2. **Fruits**

    – While insects form the bulk of their diet, sloth bears are also known to eat a variety of **fruits**. They may feed on **mangoes**, **tamarind**, **jackfruit**, and **berries** when available. Fruit provides them with vitamins and sugars, supplementing their diet.

    ### 3. **Honey**

    – Sloth bears are fond of **honey**, which they may find by raiding beehives. Their thick fur helps protect them from bee stings, and they use their claws to tear into hives to access the honeycomb.

    ### 4. **Small Vertebrates**

    – Though not a major part of their diet, sloth bears have been known to eat **small mammals**, **reptiles**, and **birds** on occasion, particularly when other food sources are scarce.

    ### 5. **Other Plant Material**

    – Sloth bears may also consume **leaves**, **roots**, and **flowers**, especially when insect and fruit availability is low.

Overall, the sloth bear is an **omnivore** with a heavy reliance on **insects**, but it will also forage for a wide variety of other foods to supplement its diet. Its diet is largely shaped by the **season** and **availability** of food in its environment, typically found in the **forests** and **grasslands** of **India**, **Sri Lanka**, and parts of **Nepal** and **Bangladesh**.
