The founder of the Maratha Empire was Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
He established the empire in 1674 CE when he was crowned as the first Chhatrapati (king) at Raigad Fort. Shivaji Maharaj was a brilliant military strategist and an astute administrator, known for his innovative guerrilla warfare tactics and the establishment of a well-structured administrative system.
Under his leadership, the Marathas challenged the dominance of the Mughal Empire and laid the foundation for a powerful regional kingdom in western India. The Maratha Empire later expanded significantly under his successors, becoming a dominant force in 18th-century India.
