The Indian National Congress (INC) was founded by Allan Octavian Hume, a retired British civil servant, in 1885.
Hume played a key role in bringing together Indian leaders from different regions to form a political platform advocating for Indian rights under British rule. The first session of the INC was held in Bombay (now Mumbai) from December 28–31, 1885, and was presided over by Womesh Chunder Bonnerjee.
Other prominent early leaders included Dadabhai Naoroji, Surendranath Banerjee, Ferozeshah Mehta, and Badruddin Tyabji, who shaped the INC into a major political force in India’s freedom movement.
