The first Sultan of Delhi to issue coins in the name of the Caliph was Iltutmish (reigned 1211–1236).
Iltutmish, the third ruler of the Delhi Sultanate, strengthened his legitimacy by acknowledging the suzerainty of the Abbasid Caliphate. In 1229 CE, he received an investiture (formal recognition) from the Abbasid Caliph in Baghdad, which elevated his authority. Following this, he began issuing coins bearing the name of the Caliph, signifying his acceptance as a legitimate ruler in the Islamic world.
This move helped consolidate his position and bolster the sovereignty of the Delhi Sultanate in the Indian subcontinent.
