Candy floss (or cotton candy) was invented by William Morrison, a dentist, and John C. Wharton, a confectioner, in 1897. They created the first machine to spin sugar into fine threads, which could then be collected and formed into the fluffy treat we know today. The invention was first introduced to the public at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, where it was marketed as “fairy floss” and became an instant hit.
