The first successful polio vaccine was developed by Jonas Salk in 1955. His inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) was the first to be proven effective in preventing poliomyelitis. Later, Albert Sabin developed an oral polio vaccine (OPV), which became widely used in the 1960s.
