The hardest naturally occurring substance is diamond. Diamond is a form of carbon, and its atoms are arranged in a crystal lattice structure, which gives it exceptional hardness. It ranks 10 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, the highest possible rating. This makes diamond the hardest known material, capable of cutting or scratching almost any other substance.
