The word “quarantine” originates from the Italian language. It comes from the word “quaranta”, which means “forty.” The term was used during the 14th century to describe the practice of isolating ships and their crews for forty days to prevent the spread of plague and other infectious diseases. Ships arriving in port from areas affected by disease were required to remain isolated for this period before passengers and cargo were allowed to disembark.
