The founder of the Mauryan Empire was Chandragupta Maurya. He established the empire in c. 321 BCE after overthrowing the Nanda dynasty.
Chandragupta was a brilliant military leader and strategist, and he initially rose to power with the guidance of his mentor, Chanakya (also known as Kautilya), who was a scholar and political strategist. Together, they laid the foundation for one of the most significant empires in Indian history.
Under Chandragupta’s leadership, the Mauryan Empire expanded to cover much of the Indian subcontinent, from the northern regions to parts of the Deccan Plateau. His reign marked the beginning of a centralized and efficient administration system that would become one of the largest empires in ancient India. Later, his grandson, Ashoka, would further expand and promote the empire, especially through his embrace of Buddhism.
